The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has made it clear that its next national head coach — along with overseas support staff — must operate from Afghanistan during the off-season.
ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan said the board has included a clause in the contracts requiring the duty station of the head coach and other foreign coaches to be Afghanistan.
“We want the national team coaches to closely monitor our domestic players. When there are no international series scheduled, they should work on improving the team’s weak areas,” Naseeb said.
The development follows the resignation of Jonathan Trott, who stepped down after Afghanistan’s group-stage exit at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Shortlist Finalized
ACB is aiming to appoint the new head coach before Afghanistan’s upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka national cricket team, scheduled to be played in Dubai and Sharjah from March 13 to 25.
According to Naseeb, the board’s HR and technical departments have shortlisted three candidates. Interviews have already been conducted.
- Two candidates are from South Africa
- One candidate is from Asia
“We will announce the appointment before the Sri Lanka series once the hiring is finalized,” Naseeb confirmed, adding that contract negotiations are still ongoing and names cannot be disclosed yet.
The upcoming series will feature three ODIs and three T20Is.
